Restrictions of plague-affected prairie dog areas in Commerce City, Colorado

Prairie Dog Colony

The Tri-County Health Department has been monitoring several plague-affected prairie dog areas impacting the dirt open space areas around Dicks Sporting Goods Park and the Prairie Gateway Open Space in Commerce City, and coordinating efforts with the adjacent Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge, which has also has plague-affected areas on its property. Plague control efforts have been underway for several weeks. It is safe for the public to attend events at Dicks Sporting Good Park at the arena, on the grounds with asphalt, or in other designated areas open for use. All dirt open space areas around the Park remain closed and people should follow closure signs and avoid entering these areas.

Tri-County Health Department informed Dicks Sporting Goods Park that camping would not be permitted anywhere on the premises for the upcoming Phish concert. There is still concern about campers being exposed to plague-infected fleas that could put people and pets at risk. Camping is not permitted at least through Labor Day weekend.

While there are no human cases of plague being reported, plague can cause serious illness.

Tri-County Health Department will continue to monitor these plague-affected areas to determine when these closed areas may reopen. Information about plague is available at www.tchd.org/271/Animal-Related-Zoonotic-Diseases.
