John M. Douglas, Jr. Tri-County Health Department Announces New Executive Director
The Board of Health of Tri-County Health Department is pleased to announce that John M. Douglas, Jr., M.D., has been named executive director of the agency. Douglas comes to Tri-County after holding leadership positions at Denver Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“Dr. Douglas is uniquely qualified to oversee all aspects of the agency, with over three decades of local and national experience as a physician and public health expert,” states Thomas Fawell, M.D., president of Tri-County Health Department’s Board of Health.

Douglas replaces Richard L. Vogt, M.D., who retired in July.

Before joining Tri-County Health Department, Douglas was the director of the Division of STD Prevention at the CDC, and, subsequently, chief medical officer at The National Center for HIV / AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, supervising over 300 public health professionals in both domestic programs and international efforts.

Prior to that, he was the director of STD Control at Denver Public Health, an attending physician at Denver General Hospital, and professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

“I am thrilled to be back in Colorado. I look forward to continuing the long tradition of excellence at Tri-County Health Department, continuing our partnerships with stakeholders such as clients, community organizations, schools, and primary care providers, and further improving the health of our residents,” Douglas said.

Douglas earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Davidson College in North Carolina; an M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts; and had his residency training in Primary Care Internal Medicine and fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington. He is Board Certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Internal Medicine.
