Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World |
|||||
![]() Tri-County Health Department joins the Denver Museum of Nature & Science in promoting the exhibition "Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World." More than 250 priceless artifacts are on display from March 2 - May 20, 2007. Benjamin Franklin was a diplomat, scientist, inventor and co-founder of America's first public hospital. In his day, many beliefs about health and disease were based on superstition, but Franklin came up with some astonishingly accurate ideas and inventions that relate to public health... |
Environmental Health: Franklin was one of America’s first environmentalists, improving sanitation, supporting conservation and speaking out against the pollution that tanneries emptied into rivers. Refrigeration: Franklin
observed that he stayed cooler in a wet shirt in a breeze, which
led to his experiments in refrigeration and food storage.
Franklin
Stove: Franklin designed his freestanding
fireplace to conserve fuel, provide central
heating and prevent tragic house fires.
Lightning
Rod: Before Franklin's invention, lightning
destroyed or damaged many buildings.
Common
Cold: Before the knowledge
of viruses and germs, Franklin determined that the common
cold was somehow passed between people through the air.
Lead
Poisoning: As a printer,
Pennsylvania
Hospital: Provided medical care
to poor citizens who could not afford a private physician.
Exercise and Health: As an avid swimmer, Franklin was
one of the earliest supporters of regular exercise as a way of
maintaining one's health. Today we know that regular cardiovascular
exercise can prevent a variety of ailments.
"An Ounce of Prevention, is Worth a Pound of Cure" Ben Franklin's most famous quote is the inspiration for our recent annual report - "An Ounce of Prevention... What Is It Really Worth?" Click the image to download your copy: |
