Tri-County
helps prevent infectious (contagious) diseases that can be spread by person-to-person
contact, from animals or through food and water. These include
such serious diseases as influenza, E. coli O157:H7, hepatitis A, meningitis
and Pertussis (Whooping cough).
(See our Chronic Disease page for information on heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.)
Think of
us as disease detectives. In an outbreak, the disease control staff
trace the cause of an illness to its source, determine who else is
at risk, and put control measures into place - such as immunizing
the at-risk population or issuing glove orders for restaurant workers.
By law,
certain diseases that have public health consequences must be reported
to public health agencies from health care providers and laboratories
in order to keep the illness from spreading.

Tri-County
Health Department also tracks infectious disease data across the
region through the Colorado Electronic Disease Reporting System (CEDRS).
CEDRS is a confidential early-warning system that allows us to follow
disease trends and put urgent prevention measures into place in order
to protect our community.
